Freeport, the Europe’s largest outlet shopping center seemed too small for the crowd that went there to see Jamie Cullum play, on April 23th. It was a small concert, for a thousand guests only (no tickets, just invitations).
Jamie Cullum, a 23 years old British jazz singer, gave a two hours concert for a mostly young audience who seemed to know all his lyrics by heart.
The concert began around 9pm and lasted until 11pm, with the audience singing along with Jamie his major hits (such as “Everlasting love”, “These are the days”, “Wind cries Mary” or “Twenty Something”). The singer also performed songs from his upcoming album.
Jamie Cullum had already came to Portugal but only for a short appearance at the television show “Herman Sic” (April 25th 2004) and is now coming back to play at “Cool Jazz Fest”, in Oeiras, on July 27th 2005.
Jamie Cullum, with a short but brilliant and successful career, is the proof that Jazz music did not die with genius like Nat King Cole or that jazz does not have to be “music for the elites”. People are already calling “Frank Sinatra with jeans” to this amazing singer, composer and piano player. His concerts are eclectic, to say the least: whether they are full with people or they have almost anyone. Either way, the music critics around the world, who already consider him the greatest UK music of our time, adore him.
Cullum has 3 albums: “Heard it all before”, “Pointless Nostalgic” and “TwentySomething”, which sold more than a million copies, becoming the most sold Jazz album in the UK ever.
Jamie Cullum plays jazz but not a pure one. He sometimes mixes jazz with some other music styles, such as Rap, Rock or Drum ‘n Bass. Jamie Cullum is able to jump from one music style to another, avoiding any kind of labeling on his work (except for the one that says “excellent”).
The artist uses the piano as if it was an extension of his own body and, at the same time, he sings wonderfully and interacts with the audience during the songs (being able to stop, follow the audience’s rhythm and then get back to the song).
Freeport definitely welcomed a great concert of a great artist. Now it is time to sit down, enjoy Cullum’s albums and wait for him to be back in Portugal, on July.

Seems aproppriate posting a comment in proper English. So, I'll just say that you have yourself a reeaallly nice review here, colorfully detailed and well written. On the other hand, it's Jamie Cullum you're talking about, so even Shakespear's words wouldn't make the man justice!
